I'm always looking for an excuse to bake a cake and today, it was all out with a multi-layer chocolate – chocolate fudge frosting to celebrate the birthday of Michael Crichton, the author who turned me into a bibliophile.

Back in middle school, The Andromeda Strain scared the living sh*t out of me when lifted it from my parent's library, and from then on - books were my favorite reason to stay up late, my go-to for inspiration or information, and the best way to ward off loneliness or to escape during some really tough times.

Andromeda was written in 1969 so you might not have heard of it. Without spoiling the book for you if you’re in the mood for a very satisfying old school read, it is an all-out

sci-fi thriller about a team of scientists who are investigating an extraterrestrial microorganism that rapidly and fatally clots human blood.

I became an expert in all things blood and briefly thought I might want to be a hematopathologist but being a tween, I quickly moved on to other ideas. But the pure joy of reading a well-crafted, well-written story never changed.

Crichton wrote a few others you might be more familiar with - Jurassic Park, The Lost World, and The Great Train Robbery to name a few. He was also the creator of the TV series ER.

Michael Crichton died in 2008 but scroll around on Amazon and you'll find thousands of readers still enjoying his books. Maybe you'll find one you love, too?

Hope you'll stop by for a slice of cake and tell me, what is the book that made you a book lover?

Off to read,

Julie

P.S. Jurassic Park the book is 10x more scary than the movie!
